गुंजन अपनी शुरूआती पढाई उत्तर प्रदेश के कानपुर से पूरी की। बचपन से हीं वह इंजीनियर बनना चाहती थी, इसलिए उन्होंने 12वीं के बाद कड़ी मेहनत से जेईई परीक्षा पास की और आईआईटी रुड़की में दाखिला ले लिया। इंजीनियरिंग की पढ़ाई के दौरान गुंजन आस-पास के गांव में गरीब बच्चों को पढ़ाने जाती थीं। इस दौरान गरीब बच्चों की खराब कंडीशन को देखते हुए गुंजन उनकी मदद करना चाहती थी इसलिए उन्होंने सिविल सर्विस एग्जाम देने का फैसला किया।
