परिजात के पुष्प को “हरसिंगार” के नाम से पहचाना जाता है क्योंकि भगवान श्रीहरि के श्रृंगार के लिए परिजात के फूलों का उपयोग किया जाता है। इसकी सुगन्ध बहुत ही मनमोहन होता है। अगर हम इस पेड़ की छाया में बैठे या इसे स्पर्श करें तो इससे सभी थकान मिट जाती है।

परिजात को रात की रानी एवं शिफाली शिउली इत्यादि नाम से भी पहचाना जाता है। इसका वानस्पतिक नाम निक्टेन्थिस आर्बोर्ट्रिस्टिस (Nyctanthes Arbortristis) है। इंग्लिश में लोग इसे “नाइट जैस्मीन भी कहते हैं। इस पेड़ पर अधिक मात्रा में फूल लगते हैं, जिसे देख कर मन मोहित हो जाता है। इस पेड़ की ऊंचाई लगभग 10 से 25 होती है।

परिजात के पुष्प रात में खिलते हैं एवं सुबह होते ही झड़ जाते हैं, जिस कारण इसे रातरानी कहा जाता है। इसे पश्चिम बंगाल का राजकीय पुष्प भी माना जाता है। इस संसार में इसके मात्र 5 प्रजातियां ही मिलती है।

इसमें औषधीय गुण समाहित होते हैं। अगर इसके बीज का सेवन किया जाए तो बवासीर की बीमारी ठीक हो जाती है, एवं इसके रस के सेवन से हृदय रोग से निवारण होता है।

अगर किसी को सूखी खांसी हुई है, तो इसके पतियों को पीसने के उपरांत शहद में मिलाकर उसे पिलाया जाए तो उसकी खांसी ठीक हो सकती है। अगर त्वचा में कोई बीमारी है तो इसकी पत्तियों को लगाने से वह रोग ठीक हो जाता है।

धन की देवी माता लक्ष्मी जी को परिजात के पुष्प बहुत ही प्रिय है। अगर पूजा पाठ के दौरान मां पर यह फूल चढ़ाया जाए तो वे अत्यधिक प्रसन्न होती है। इस पुष्प के इस्तेमाल के लिए बताया गया है कि इसे कभी भी पेड़ से तोड़कर नहीं चढ़ाया जाता। बल्कि जो पुष्प पेड़ से नीचे गिरते हैं उन्हें ही देवी-देवताओं पर चढ़ाया जाता है।

कैसे हुई इसकी उत्पत्ति?
जानकारी के अनुसार परिजात के वृक्ष की उत्पत्ति समुद्र मंथन से हुई थी, जिसे स्वर्ग के देवता इंद्र ने अपने बागों में लगाया था। ऐसा कहा जाता है कि अज्ञातवास के दौरान जब माता कुंती ने अपनी इच्छा जाहिर की, कि वे परिजात के पुष्प से ही शिव का पूजन करेंगी। तब उनकी इच्छा पूर्ति के लिए अर्जुन स्वर्ग गए और इस वृक्ष को लाकर वहां स्थापित किया। उस वक्त के बाद परिजात के पेड़ की पूजा अर्चना की जाती है।
