आपको बता दें कि Eugene Showmaker ने चन्द्रमा के कई घाटियों, पहाड़ों और गड्ढों की खोज कर उनका नामकरण किया था। इसके अलावा उन्होंने अंतरिक्ष में मौजूद कई धूमकेतुओं की खोज कर उसके बारे में लोगों को जानकारी भी दी थी। लेकिन वर्ष 1997 में जब वह एक धूमकेतु की तलाश में जा रहे थे तो उनकी कार का एक्सीडेंट हो गया जिसमें उनकी मृत्यु हो गई।
Shoemaker के एक पुराने छात्र ने उनको श्रद्धांजलि देने के लिए उनकी अस्थियों को चांद पर ले जाने के लिए नासा से संपर्क किया, जिसमें वे मान गए और 1998 में Lunar Prospector मिशन के तहत Shoemaker के अस्थियों को वहां दफना दिया गया। इस प्रकार Eugene Showmaker पहले ऐसे शख्स बने जिनकी कब्र चांद पर बनी।
